How Many Electrical Outlets Per Room Is Standard?

When planning a remodel, finishing a basement, or buying an older home, you may wonder how many electrical outlets you should have per room. The number of outlets in a room makes a difference when planning the layout of a space.

The NEC Six-Foot Rule: How Outlet Spacing Works 

The National Electrical Code (NEC) dictates minimum requirements for the number of outlets provided in a room. However, you may install as many outlets as you want, so long as your home’s wiring and circuit breakers can safely handle the load.

We’re going to walk through the NEC standards for outlet placement by room type. This way, you can plan your remodel work safely and effectively. 

Bathroom Outlet Code

The NEC states all 125-volt through 250-volt receptacles in a bathroom must have GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection, which helps prevent severe electric shock and saves many lives each year. GFCI monitors the electrical current balance, detects leaks, and cuts power to stop dangerous shocks.

The code also requires at least one 20-amp branch circuit to supply power to bathroom outlets. At least one outlet must be placed within three feet (36 inches) of the outside edge of sink basins. Outlets must not be placed directly behind sink basins to prevent water contact. Outlets are not allowed in tub or shower areas, nor within three feet horizontally of the bathtub or shower stall. 

Kitchen Outlet Requirements

The NEC requirements for kitchen outlets help ensure safety around water and high-wattage appliances, such as air fryers, coffee machines, and toaster ovens. 

The code requires that all countertop spaces 24 inches or wider have a receptacle. Outlets should be placed above countertops at a maximum of 48 inches apart. Additionally, the height of wall-mounted outlets must not exceed 20 inches above the countertop surface.

All 125-volt, 15- and 20-amp receptacles for countertop use or within six feet of a sink require GFCI protection. Additionally, 15- and 20-amp branch circuits for kitchen use must also have Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (AFCI) protection. AFCI protection prevents electrical fires by detecting loose connections, frayed wires, and other dangerous electrical arcs.

Outlets on kitchen islands are optional, depending on local codes.

How Many Outlets in a Bedroom Are Standard?

The number of outlets in a bedroom depends on the room’s square footage. The NEC dictates that no point on a wall can be more than six feet from an outlet. This rule means no outlets are placed more than 12 feet apart. Also, any wall section over two feet in width requires its own electrical outlet. 

All 15- and 20-amp outlets in bedrooms must be tamper-resistant, meaning they must have built-in spring shutters that block foreign objects from entering the receptacle. Bedroom outlets also must be protected by AFCI. The NEC doesn’t dictate a specific outlet-to-circuit cap, but a licensed electrician can determine the proper outlet maximum to prevent tripped breakers.

Garage Outlet Requirements

The NEC states at least one receptacle per vehicle bay must be installed and fed by a dedicated 20-amp branch circuit. Outlets should be placed no higher than five-and-a-half feet from the garage floor. Outlets for garage door openers that are mounted on the ceiling do not count towards this requirement. Additionally, no point along the wall should be more than six feet horizontally from an outlet.

Living Room Outlet Standards

Living room outlet requirements are very similar to bedrooms. The NEC dictates outlets must be spaced no more than 12 feet apart. No point along the wall should be more than six feet from an outlet. These rules help prevent extension cords from being used too often. Any wall more than two feet in width must have its own receptacle. 

Any 15-amp and 20-amp, 125-volt outlets in living rooms must also be tamper-resistant and feature AFCI protection to reduce the risk of electrical fires. Living rooms must have at least one wall-switch-controlled lighting outlet. 

Adding Outlets in Older Homes

Often, older homes built before the 1960s have only one or two outlets per room, and that was enough at the time. However, with advancements in technology and increased power demands from TVs, laptops, phone chargers, kitchen appliances, and smart devices, you likely need more outlets in each room. Instead of relying on extension cords as permanent fixtures, contact an electrician to assess your wiring and install additional outlets.

Often, licensed electricians must run new, dedicated circuits to support modern power demands in older homes. For example, homes built before the 1960s weren’t required to have ground wires. An electrician can also install GFCI outlets for shock protection or fish a new ground wire from your electrical panel.
